HERTS Phoenix sent their top throwers to Cambridgeshire for the AA festival at the university track on Saturday.

In tough conditions Great Britain youth international javelin thrower Peta Lundgren, from St Albans, recorded an excellent 37.73m into the swirling wind in the Under 20s women's category. Peta, aged 18, was ranked third in the Under 20s British women's javelin in 2007 with a best of 44.13m.

Peta's sister Millie, in her first year as an Under 17s competitor threw a promising 27.07m and Katie Grehan threw a personal best mark of 33.18m to beat the qualifying standard for the English Schools championships at Gateshead later this summer.

Richard Humphries, ranked number six in the UK in the Under 15s boys age group last year moved up to the Under 17s men and with it a heavier, 5kg, hammer.

Richard steadily improved through his series of throws to win his category and end with a very satisfying 44.92m in his first competition in this age group. He then followed this up with a best Discus throw of 31.86m as the rain returned and conditions worsened in the afternoon.

All these athletes will be hoping for better weather at Gosling Stadium this Friday when they compete in the Herts Phoenix Good Friday open meeting and look to improve further on their early season form.
