London Colney came out on top in the game of the day in the Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division with a 3-2 at Wembley.

The game had started with the sides occupying first and second in the table but it was the league leaders who took the spoils thanks to goals from Gregg Douglas, Archie McClelland and Jack Woods.

The result extends the Blueboys lead to 14 points.

Colney took their time to get going with the hosts enjoying more of the play.

But slowly the tide turned and after Jon Clements forced Grigoli Zulamashuki into a save, Spencer Clarke-Mardel had an effort ruled out for offside.

But they did take the lead on 33 minutes when Douglas pounced on a rebound after Roy Bryon’s shot was blocked.

They almost got a second after a defensive mix-up saw Carl Preece head inadvertantly over his own bar.

But Wembley shocked their visitors with an equaliser just before half-time from Joe Wright.

However, Colney went back in front seven minutes into the second half.

A surging run by James Lawrence down the left saw him deliver a inch-perfect ball for McClelland to score with a header.

It soon became 3-1 when Woods curled in a free-kick.

But the game turned again and with the Blueboys searching for a fourth, Wembley pulled one back, again through Wright.

This time it came from the penalty spot after Douglas had brought the scorer down.

It led to a few nervy moments but despite the pressure, Colney hung on for a fine win.

They were in Herts Charity Shield action on Tuesday night where they needed penalties to reach the semi-final at the expense of St Margaretsbury.

Ashley Morrissey and Clements twice put Colney in front but twice Saints came back, first through Rian Carroll, and then Ryan Wade.

But it was Tom Gowans who was the hero in the shoot-out, saving from Carroll.

The Blueboys’ continue to focus on cup competitions with the visit of Holmer Green to Cotlandswick on Saturday in the FA Vase.
