London Colney ended a run of seven defeats in eight Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division games with a well-deserved 3-1 win over Oxhey Jets.

Loren Maxwell got things started after 18 minutes and Emmanuel Hammond made it two three minutes later.

He then headed home a third before half-time as Colney cruised into a 3-0 half-time lead.

They could have had more but when Elijah Seymore pulled one back, there were a few alarm bells ringing.

But they needn’t have worried though as they finished on the front foot.

From the off this didn’t look like a side who were struggling for form.

They were bright, they were quick to close down and were invariably first to any second ball.

Even at the back, the defence were switched on throughout despite being spectators for much of it.

That was exemplified by a goal-line clearance as the clock entered stoppage time.

But it was up front where they really shone.

Darion Furlong down the right and Laurence Vaughan on the left were the scourge of the Jets defence.

With alarming regularity they got beyond their man and delivered an inch-perfect cross and it was no surprise when the three goals came from this route.

The first two goals saw the defence fail to deal with the balls into the box.

Maxwell shifted the ball away from his marker and fired low for 1-0 and Hammond gleefully slammed home the second after Frankie Atwell came but didn’t collect.

The third also saw the defence fail to deal with a ball in but this time also throw in the crime of leaving Hammond totally unmarked in the six-yard box.

His header was one for those of us who remember old-fashioned centre-forwards, powered in off the angle of bar and post.

The metalwork was also involved in the first six minutes after the restart as the Blueboys came out in exactly the same fashion.

First the inside of the post was rattled by Olu Quarri after shimmying and swaying his way to the edge of the box.

Vaughan then hit the bar although he may have a hard time claiming his cross was actually a shot, regardless of how well he was playing.

Zach Holding then had the ball in the net but his header was ruled out by the linesman’s flag.

Oxhey’s goal rattled the fragile nerves of the hosts who began to show the strain of their recent form.

And it made you wonder what difference would have been made had Armstrong not cleared off the line or Oxhey didn’t have a goal ruled out for pushing just before half-time.

They were also denied by Joe Simmons with the score at 0-0 and when they did force the pace late on, they found the Colney keeper a tough barrier to break down.

But this was Colney’s day, as it had been for most of the game, and the hope at Cotlandswick will be they can build on this in the weeks to come.
