SOLOMON Shields believes City can build on their first away win of the season at Weymouth as they look to improve their early season fortunes.

Shields, who scored City's second goal in the 2-0 win, impressed with an energetic performance in the middle of the park and the former Leyton Orient trainee is now targeting helping City climb the Blue Square South table.

"Obviously Weymouth are down there but it's easier said than done to beat them," the midfielder told the Herts Advertiser.

"It's not played on paper as they say but it's nice to get that first away win and now we've got to build on that and climb up the table.

"I think we really needed a win and everybody's been trying so hard the last few weeks and it's good to get it."

Manager Steve Castle said the first goal gave his side more confidence and allowed players like Shields to relax, and the 19-year-old echoed his manager's comments.

"I think before that they had a lot of play. It's hard to come a long way and let the other team be on top but the goal settled us down and everyone believed a bit more that we could do it.

"We were confident but the goal gave us a bit more to carry on and try and win the match."

The trip to the Wessex Stadium was Shields' first game since returning from suspension and the youngster revealed he's used his time on the sidelines to improve his fitness.

"I feel a bit fitter, I've been working during the suspension to get fitter and it allowed me to get up and down and I hope to continue like that."

Shields' goal, just after the hour mark, was the culmination of a fantastic move involving Gary Cohen and the midfielder was delighted to add to his City tally.

"I wasn't sure if Gary saw me but he cut it back, I knew I had a bit of time so I took my time, picked my spot and fortunately found the net," said Shields.

City now turn their attentions to the FA Cup with a trip to Heybridge Swifts awaiting them this Saturday. A victory would not only be a boost to the players and fans but also to the club's coffers with the winners of the tie pocketing 4,500.

A tie against lower league opposition has been welcomed but Shields insists the players won't be underestimating their opponents.

"We can't really afford to underestimate anyone, especially as we don't play them a lot and know how they play," added the midfielder.

"I think we've just got to take this win into it, keep the confidence and just work hard again to get the result.
