London Colney 1 Welwyn Garden City 5

FORMER Colney Heath marksman Jake Parratt scored twice as London Colney were sunk 5-1 by Welwyn Garden City on Saturday in the Premier Division.

Four goals in the last 15 minutes proved decisive for WGC after the Blueboys had battled back to level the match.

Midfielder Greg Shaw fired just wide for Colney early on with Welwyn goalkeeper Simon Bartley beaten.

Colney defender Lee Benning made two important interventions to deny the Citizens and Colney goalkeeper Gary Statham executed two fine saves denying Barnet youth prospect Chris Doyle and Parratt.

WGC opened the scoring on 33 minutes when Parratt's free kick from distance was allowed to travel all the way into the back of the net, with the run of Jason Williams distracting the Colney goalkeeper.

Centre back Mark Paradise kept Colney in the match with a fine clearance to deny the rampaging Doyle while midfielder Sam Mitchell worked hard, probing for opportunities at the other end.

The Blueboys hauled themselves back into the match in the second half and Cain Davey almost set up a chance for Danny Fitzgerald in the box. Davey then danced clear of the Welwyn defence but fired just wide.

Colney found a deserved equaliser when Mitchell showed great persistence to win the loose ball after his initial effort was blocked and beat Bartley with a low drive.

The hosts were buoyant and sought a second with Fitzgerald firing over the cross bar and Mitchell seeing his strike saved.

Statham denied the determined visitors with saves from Onur Ahmet and Craig Tomkins but in the 76th minute, the Citizens restored their lead. Tomkins picked up a misdirected punch from Statham and drilled the ball home for 2-1.

WGC sealed the win three minutes later as Howard Hall was felled by Statham in the box and Parratt converted from the penalty spot.

Colney wing back Dave Corran was robbed by Barnet academy prospect Azeez Yusuff who fired home the fourth goal and with minutes to go WGC made it a famous five. Jason Williams bludgeoned his way through and cracked the ball home to heap more misery on Colney who end a terrible campaign with just 13 points.
