Woking v St Albans City

Tuesday, February 8, 2011

KINGFIELD is the next stop for the Saints as they look to claw their way to safety.

ADDRESS: Kingfield Stadium, Kingfield, Woking, Surrey, GU22 9AA

THE LOW-DOWN: Woking have had a poor 2010/11 season by their standards and are currently languishing in 12th place.

The Cards suffered a disappointing defeat to Zamaretto Premier Division Salisbury City on Saturday in the FA Trophy, losing 2-0 in front of their own fans at Kingfield.

Inconsistency has been the Cards’ major problem this season with a fine 3-2 win in the FA Trophy at Blue Square Premier title hopefuls AFC Wimbledon was followed by defeats to Whyteleafe (Surrey Senior Cup), Braintree Town and Salisbury City (FA Trophy).

Garry Hill’s first league victory came seven days ago when Elvis Hammond’s 60th minute goal gave Woking a 1-0 win over Thurrock.

THE MANAGER: Garry Hill has only just taken over at Kingfield following the departure of Graham Baker and his assistant Jimmy Dack.

Hill has a wealth of experience in the non-league game and had a 68-game spell at Clarence Park taking the Saints to the FA Trophy semi-finals. Following his time with City, Hill moved to Dagenham & Redbridge where he guided the Daggers to several high-profile FA Cup giantkillings.

Most recently Hill had been in charge at Rushden & Diamonds before leaving in February 2009 and he remained out of football until his appointment on a deal until the end of the season at Kingfield.

THE SQUAD: Former AFC Wimbledon goalkeeper Andy Little provides experience in goal for the Cards having joined from Croydon Athletic in September.

Reiss Noel missed Saturday’s defeat to Salisbury City because he was cup-tied but the former Saints is likely to return to face his former employers at right-back. Joe McNerney and Adam Doyle line up in the heart of the defence although the experienced Alan Inns will be hoping to retain his place in the starting XI have been selected on Saturday. Providing pace and strength on the left side of the defence is former Charlton youngster Aswad Thomas.

Kieran Murtagh joined the Cards on a one-month loan deal from League 1 side Wycombe Wanderers last week and has slotted straight into central midfield alongside another ex-Charlton man Mark Ricketts.

Woking can boast pace in abundance on the flanks through Moses Ademola and former Saint Sam Hurrell but both can be inconsistent.

Boss Garry Hill has plenty of options at his disposal up front with Dave Gilroy, Elvis Hammond and Craig Faulconbridge all fighting for a place in the starting XI.

LAST TIME: Woking inflicted a first home defeat of the current campaign on City when they visited Clarence Park in September.

Ricky Anane’s 34th minute strike was enough to give the visitors all three points in front of 490 spectators, Clarence Park’s biggest gate so far this season.

Steve Castle’s last visit to Kingfield also provides unhappy memories as the Saints crashed out of last season’s FA Trophy following a 6-0 defeat to the Cards just 11 days after Lamine Sagna’s only goal in a City shirt had given the Saints all three points in the league game at Kingfield.

REFEREE (subject to change): Adam Bromley (Plymouth) assisted by D Goard and A J Quin.
