SOME did Mexican waves to warm up the waiting crowd; others draped themselves in Union Jack flags.
Thousands lined the streets of St Albans to cheer on those successfully nominated to carry the Olympic flame through the city today, Sunday July 8.
Siblings Samuel, 6, and Thomas Potter, 4, travelled from Reading for the relay. They joined Eddie Hearn, 3, of St Albans to wave homemade torches constructed from gold coloured cardboard and orange, red and yellow “flames”.
Peter Crumpler of St Paul’s Church, Hatfield Road, said: “It was a brilliant afternoon. We opened up the church and showed the Wimbledon final on big screens while outside we served tea, coffee and cake to everyone turning up to watch the Olympic Flame go by. “We had a band playing at the corner of Hatfield and Blandford Road to add to the experience.
“It was great that the torch handover took place right by the church so that people who had gathered near St Paul’s had a front row view of the spectacle. The afternoon will be remembered by many for a long time.”
