The sports teams at the University of Hertfordshire have set a new record by winning nine Southern Eastern (SE) leagues this season.
The university also brought home the Varsity trophy after beating local rivals, the University of Bedfordshire.
Most recently, the American Football team won their league and cup trophy and were National finalists, narrowly losing out to the University of Stirling at Allianz Park.
After winning the SE 1A league, the men’s Badminton 1st team are going into the Premier play-offs and the 2nd team won the SE 3A league by beating Reading University 7-1.
The women’s 1st teams have had a knock-out season. Basketball celebrated winning the SE 2B league when they beat Kent’s 1st team 37-8. The tennis team won the SE 2B league, smashing Essex’s 1st team 12-0. Another success was the volleyball team who won the SE 2B league, beating Canterbury Christ Church. Finally, the netball team are going into the Premier play-offs, after winning the SE 1A league.
The men’s football 2nd team won the SE 3B league 2-1, in a challenging match against the University of Westminster’s 1st team. The 3rd team also won the SE 4D league by beating UCL’s 2nd team 4-1.
Both the men’s badminton 1st and netball 1st teams are playing the home tie of their Premier play-off fixtures on Wednesday, April 29 at Hertfordshire Sports Village.
Stefano Sacco, men’s badminton 1st team captain said: “Being elected as captain and having the pleasure of playing with some fantastic players has made this year at Hertfordshire one of my best. The fact we won varsity, the league and are now in competition for promotion to the premiership is such a huge achievement.”
Emily Fensome, women’s netball 1st team captain added: “Winning the league means a lot to us because it means that all our hard work and early morning sessions have paid off! It also means we are one step closer to our main goal of promotion into the premier league.”
Lee Rowe-Elliott, Varsity captain concluded: “Winning varsity and lifting the trophy was an amazing way to end the season and my playing career at Hertfordshire. We have kept this winning streak going for one year longer, no pressure next year!”
