Harpenden Town 3 Haringey Borough 3

A LATE goal from Haringey Borough denied Harpenden Town victory in the Molten Spartan South Midlands Division One on Saturday.

Ben Ralphs opened the scoring as Harpenden shot out of the blocks and Adam Smith made it 2-0 from the penalty spot. Richard Taaffe fired in the third inside the first 2-0 minutes as Town, galvanised by manager Paul Tomkins, dominated.

Title chasers Haringey Borough battled back with a goal from Karl Lewis just before half time and with the pace and power of their front players looked capable of snatching a result.

Harpenden held out until the final 10 minutes when strikes from Patrick Billong and Joel Phillips denied the Rothamsted Park outfit a spectacular win.

Former manager Steve Cornwell has wished the club well after his tenure ended recently. He said: "I hope they do well. The rapport with the lads up there was always very good and we wanted to do well. I think the group of players are better than when we started.

"I have had a couple of offers to do some coaching but I think I will see what happens over the summer and in the mean time play some golf."

On Saturday, Harpenden Town go away to Brache Sparta and they host Sport London e Benfica on Tuesday. Tomkins and his assistant Gavin Kelsey will be looking to power the survival bid with more important points.
