Harpenden Town chairman Roman Motyczak is keeping positive as his side look at a return to the higher leagues.

The Rothamsted Park based club have had a decent start to their Spartan South Midlands League season and find themselves in sixth place after a 1-0 away win at Woodford Town.

Motyczak said: “It was a hard fought win against a good team. The pitch was tough to play on because of the length of the grass.

“We really played a scratch team and had a number of regular first-teamers missing.

“But the lads played well and Harry Hunt scored again.

“We’re really positive going forward.

“And to cap off a good weekend, the reserves beat St Margaretsbury 3-2 after being two goals behind.”

He added that the season had been a bit frustrating but it had to be taken in context.

He said: “We’re in a funny place at the minute. At the end of last season we would have been a bit disappointed with where we are.

“But both teams are doing well considering we have a lot of absences at the moment and a lack of player availability.

“We wanted promotion at the start of the year. We have got a long heritage but for one reason or another we have slipped down and we need to get back to it.

“Things are coming together though. We’re doing well in the league, the facilities are being done and we’re on a good run in the FA Vase.”

Focus on the Vase continues this Saturday with Town travelling to Northampton Spencer. But it is a tie Motyczak is looking forward to.

“For a club at our level the Vase is huge,” he said. “We got £600 for our win in the last round which is the same as four or five home games.

“They’re a level higher than us but we’re going up on a bus and everyone is buoyed up for it.”
