Harpenden Rugby Club unveiled the latest upgrade to its Redbourn Lane ground last weekend, an electronic scoreboard.

The club has a track record for staging high-profile events and following its refurbishment in several areas is now prepared to hold county matches.

Tony Berry, chairman of Berry Recruitment, helped the club to pay for the scoreboard.

Harpenden RFC Peter Danby said: “As an amateur community rugby club we continue to develop and improve our facilities and are greatly encouraged with the ongoing commitment shown to the club by Mr Berry and Berry Recruitment.”

A spokesman for Berry Recruitment Ltd added: “Mr Berry is delighted to be able to further assist Harpenden Rugby Club by helping to sponsor their new electronic scoreboard.”

Berry Recruitment Ltd is owned and run by the Berry family, who have long been associated with the town; Tony Berry, has lived in Harpenden for over 30 years.

Many of the Berry employees and most of its board of directors are local. Managing director Chris Chown played for Harpenden club up until he went to university and his son, Max, continues the tradition and is currently playing in the club’s mini section. Another member of the board, Ian Haddock, has a son, Jack, who plays for the first team.

Berry has been associated with the club for the last three years, initially by sponsoring the first team shirts, and is keen to develop its relationship further.

As a keen sportsman himself, Tony Berry has always valued highly his links with the sporting world and, in particular, wants to play a role in a community-based club that gives something back.

“We have been very impressed with the way that HRFC has enhanced the club facilities whilst retaining the traditional Rugby Club feel,” he said.
