HARPENDEN Swimming Club held their annual Championships on Saturday night, giving the swimmers an opportunity to swim against each other in their respective age groups.

The evening was intended to start with the presentation of the clubs Swim21 accreditation certificate but unfortunately due to illness, the President of Herts ASA was unable to attend. This did nothing however to spoil the nights entertainment as the swimmers went head to head over a number of events.

JJ Dixon, Alex Revell and Abbie Smith all took clean sweeps in their age groups winning all five events and taking the respective overall age group cups. There were some very close races during the evening and the distribution of the medals shows that some age groups have a lot of competition. All the swimmers achieved at least one PB with many getting several.

Massive PBs (over 10 seconds) were achieved by Luke Barber, Daniel Campfield, Lydia Horsley, Bailey Price, Nick Shone and Jack Singleton. There were many other swimmers who took five seconds or more off whilst the event gave a number of swimmers their first taste of competition.

Age group champions on the night were Open - Georgie Smith and Morgan Pugh, Under 14 Alex Revell and JJ Dixon, Under 13 Abby Smith and Jack Singleton, Under 12 Katy Jackson and Hamish Wheen, Under 11 Abby West and Michael Revell, Under 10 Millie Dixon and Daniel Campfield

Notable by her absence from the event was Flora Hanson. Flora, aged 13, was at the Scottish Nationals where she competed in both the 100m and 200m Backstrokes events collecting silver medals for both and missing Gold in the 200m by a mere 3 tenths of a second.

The club go into the third and final round of the Hertfordshire Major League on Saturday evening at the Herts Sports Village where they hope to confirm their current seventh place.

The swimmers are all in good heart as the results from the recent County Championships have been published and show that the club have risen to fifth place overall in the County, a massive boost to moral.
