Harpenden men had a very tight match with Herts in the London & Southern Counties Fours.

Harpenden were ahead 10-6 after nine ends but dropped five shots on the 10th end to go one down. Then it was nip and tuck all the way to the 19th end when the scores were level at 17 - 17. But Herts scored one shot on each of the last two ends to win 19 -17.

In the second round of the St Albans & District Fours the holders, Rob Newby, Doug Hall, Simon Burgess and Tony Redford (Harpenden), continued the defence of their title with an emphatic away victory over Hatfield by 29-9. Hatfield conceded the match after 17 ends, having won only three ends.

Harpenden men had a convincing victory away against Hemel Hempstead by 91-78 in the District Rinks League.

Harpenden won on three rinks and drew on one, gaining 72.5 points to Hemel's 7.5.

Ted Pentecost's rink were 5-17 down at the tea interval but came back strongly to draw 23-23. Ken Murray, one of the club's newer members, had an excellent game as lead. Top rink: Norman Blanks, Fred Whaley, Rick Catchpole, Simon Burgess, 23 - 14.

Harpenden also have four pairs through to the third round of the National Mixed Pairs.

In friendly matches, Harpenden won on three rinks out of five against Townsend for an overall victory by 106-95. Top rink: Eddie Robinson, Malcolm Kitchener, Brian Hubball, Chris Poulter, 29-15.

Harpenden also won against St Albans by 74-50, top rink: Norman Blanks, Alistair MacDonald, Mick Kirkby, Woodie Donoghue, 24-7.

IT'S been a really successful week for TOWNSEND.

It started on Monday with Andy Briden's four of Alan Charran John Godman, Danny Macro and Andy reaching the County neutral greens and followed on Tuesday by Peter Chadwick Gary West and Steven Mather plus Jason Hall, John Godman and Danny Macro reaching the same stage in the triples.

Alan Charran and Danny Macro, Roger Potter and Peter Armstrong plus John Godman reached the pairs on Wednesday while on Thursday Danny Macro, John Godman and Andy Briden reached the neutral greens in the singles.

On Friday, Gary West, Peter Armstrong and Steven Mather progressed in the London and Southern Counties Triple beating Rick Catchpole, Simon Burgess and Tony Redford of Harpenden 22-9.

The club built on this by beating Potters Bar in the District Triples league 35-22 winning both home and away then beating Ware in the top club by 3.5 to 1.5 winning the singles triples and fours losing the two wood and drawing the fours.

Finally in the club friendly the club pipped Shire Park 76-75 in a tight encounter. Things are quiet this week with County & District Tours.

IT was a very enjoyable game of triples for BATCHWOOD HALL ladies against Potters Bar ladies and the resulting tie was a fair reflection of the game.

The top rink for Batchwood was Ann Price, Nora Endericks & Liz Schlatter with a score of 18-14.

The De Havilland result was not quite so good however.

Batchwood ladies losing by three shots. Batchwood 28, De Havilland 31.

Top rink was Pat Chandler, Babs O'Brien and Julia Barber 14-12.

In round two of the National Mixed Pairs, Jackie and John Bell defeated Alan Read and Nicola Coombe from Cassiobury by 19 shots to18.

The Bells were 18 -12 up on the 16th end, but then lost the next four ends and were level at 18 all going into the final end.

In a nail biting finish they managed to win by one shot.

In the mid-week friendly at home Batchwood men had a comfortable victory over Owls by 99 shots to 64 winning on all four rinks.

In a re-arranged District League fixture against North Mymms, Batchwood lost their second league match of the season by 29 shots (86-57) winning on only one rink.
