James Gray has been promised a glut of goals at Hayes and Yeading as his players try to hit the targets set by the management.

After St Albans City’s play-off chase ended, joint manager Gray and his staff set the players three targets: reach 50 points, keep five more clean sheets and finish the season with a positive goal difference.

Saturday’s 1-0 win over Ebbsfleet United saw City surpass the 50-point mark and reach their clean-sheet target. All that’s left is the matter of winning the season finale by four or more goals.

“I’ve offered the boys a bonus to reach the targets. We’ve got two out of three and [Lee Chappell] told me to expect a goal rout at Hayes to get that over the line. I’ll be in to see the chairman to keep my end of the bargain otherwise the boys might pin me up against the wall,” he joked.

When asked about City’s poor record in front of goal - they are 17th in the table in goals scored - he added: “We might be low goalscorers but in a lot of the games, especially at home, we’ve had chances and not taken them. If we put them away, we’re in a position this squad should be, which is top half and even flirting with the play-offs.”
