St Albans City joint manager James Gray has threatened to make changes to the squad in the coming weeks if performances don’t improve.

The Saints haven’t won a Vanarama Conference South game in seven weeks and have picked up just two wins in their last 14.

They are edging ever closer to a relegation scrap and, speaking after Saturday’s 3-1 loss to Concord Rangers, Gray insisted he won’t hesitate to pull the trigger and change his squad.

“I still believe in this group. I still believe, in areas, we have the right mentality and the right players but, as a whole, the mentality needs to shift quickly because we need to understand the severity of what we’re up against. If they can’t do that, I’ll change it,” he told Saintsnet.

Gray said changes could be made as early as next week if City put in another lackadaisical performance akin to Saturday, when they conceded inside 10 minutes and only a late Jamal Lowe penalty saved them some pride.

He’s given his players the chance to prove their worth on Tuesday, in the quarter-final of the Herts Senior Cup at Boreham Wood, and against Weston-super-Mare on Saturday. If they don’t, Gray will be looking elsewhere for players to help the club out of its current rut.

“Is it a situation where the boys can’t change mentality and get into a dog fight? I’ve got players ringing me left, right and centre so if I want to change things, I can. I’ve let the players know that,” he said.

“If they don’t do what I’m asking then they’ll be down the road; I don’t want to be in a scrap and looking over my shoulder on the last day of the season.”
