Ian Allinson is delighted with the start his side has made to the National League South season so far, but knows there is more to come from his team.

A 1-0 win at Welling United on Saturday was Saints’ third win from the opening five games of the season; form which sees them fifth in the table.

The Saints boss said: “I’m over the moon we have 10 points from the first five games and I know we can do better.

“I know there is more in there.

“At the moment I have got the work rate and got the commitment, but now we have got to try to get the quality out of these players.

“If we have got to bring one or two in to bring the quality in the team [we will], I feel with that and the commitment we have got we are going to be very difficult to play at times this season.”

Of the game with Welling, the former Arsenal player said: “The first 15-20 minutes they came out of the blocks and caused us a few problems and [keeper] James Russell has had to make an absolute worldy [save] to keep it at 0-0.

“After the first 20 minutes we started to get a grip of the game and totally dominated it up to half-time and could have been out of sight.

“Their keeper made two great saves and it kept them in the game.

“Second half again they came at us and had 10-15 minutes, but once we weathered that I felt we could have gone on and won the game more comfortably.

“In the end we won 1-0 quite comfortably.

“We have got to be positive [it’s] three points, we have 10 points after five games and we’d have took that at the start of the season all day long.”

Allinson is happy with the players he has at his disposal, but is always looking to improve his playing options.

He added: “At the moment I’m more than happy with the squad.

“One or two are going to get frustrated because they are not playing and that’s understandable, but if the right player becomes available and it’s right for us in terms of the resource. Then we have to look to improve the team.”
