ATHLETICS: St Albans AC competitors secured 11 gold medals and a clutch of championship best times at the Hertfordshire Indoor County Championships at the National Athletics centre at Picketts Lock on Sunday.

The club's sprinters led the way.

Jo Richards won both the Senior womens' 60m and 200m, a feat almost matched by Jake Awe in the U17s.

His 200m winning time of 25.53 secs was one of the championship bests while he picked up silver in the 60m in 7.41secs.

Miwako Sykes' time of 29.53 secs was enough to see her win the U15s Girls 200m while Carl Palin produced a personal best (52.21 secs) to take third in the U17s 400m.

Christian Gaddes, with a new championship record of 8.78 secs, won gold in the U17s boys 60m hurdle finals with Luke Yaxley third (8.87 secs) and Jason Tang fifth.

On what proved a good day for the hurdlers, Steph Rukin won gold in the U17s womens category (9.64 secs), while there were personal bests for Laura Nofer (10.57 secs) and Joetta James (10.96) as they finished third and fourth respectively in the U15s final.

In the distance races, there were gold medals for Catherine Mackintosh (2min 27.67 secs) and Chris Hilton (2min 4.2 secs) in the U17s 800m, both new standards for the championships, while Laura Farrar won the U17s 1,500m.

There was gold for Laura Owler in the U17s long jump to add to her fourth places in both the U17s 60m and 200m, while Niamh Lawson landed the U15s long jump and silver in shot putt.

Alix Smith took silver in the U17s shot putt and Alice Townend bronze in the U15s category.
