EIGHT St Albans High School girls will compete with Britain's best young skiers at the British Championships in Edinburgh at the end of November.

The two open teams of four (including girls from Years 7 to 12) secured their places at the English Ski Championships at Rossendale, Lancashire, in October, having already made the grade at the Midland Schools' Ski Championships at Welwyn Garden City Dry Ski Slope.

"We are incredibly proud of all the girls who took part. Individually they displayed great competitive spirit and as a team there was a wonderfully supportive attitude," said school head Jacqualyn Pain. "We hope they really enjoy the challenge of skiing the steepest and longest dry ski slope in the UK."

Competing in Edinburgh will be Abigail Killen, Jo Miles, Alison Miles and Emilie Tant on the A team, and on the B team, Georgia Carr, Rebecca Harris, Lizzie Raine and Kaya Tveito-Duncan.

The Under 14 and Under 19 teams also excelled at Welwyn Garden City and Rossendale. At Welwyn, particularly impressive performances included those from the Year 7s in the two Under 14 teams that scooped first and third place. In the Under 19 category, Jo Miles was named fastest girl on the day. At Rossendale, the Under 14s did exceptionally well to come fourth and the Under 19s delivered some impressive individual results, given that many of their competitors live abroad to train half the year.
