OA Saints 20

The British Forces Combined Services 38

THE sun was once again shining down on St Albans as the third annual Memorial Match took place on Saturday.

This year the Saints upped the ante playing the Combined Services and not just The Army.

The Saints came out fired up and it wasn't long before the first score came.

From a close range lineout, the ball was spun wide across the park with winger CJ touching down in the far corner.

Both teams battled for possession but it was Saints who scored next.

A rolling maul was stopped just short of the line and scrum half Bethan Jones dived over to give the Saints a 10-0 lead.

The CS responded with expansive running scoring three consecutive tries under the posts in the first half to put them ahead 21-10 at the break.

Following half time, the Saints returned determined to keep the CS at bay but the CS had other ideas.

The opening score came from the CS winger intercepting a wide ball and running half the length of the pitch to score.

Valiant attempts to stop her kept her near the touchline and at least prevented the conversion.

The sin binning of one of Saints' locks gave the CS an advantage in scrums and after a lot of pressure a further score was crashed over.

The Saints continued to attack and won a penalty in front of the posts, which was gratefully taken to add three points to the Saints score.

The momentum continued when strike running from the Saints' centres paid off as Sarah McKenna executed a perfect move offloading to full back Megan who sliced through to score under the posts this was duly converted by Karina Page with just 10 minutes to go.

Both sides fought hard in the closing minutes of the game but the CS got one final try and the victory, running out 38-20 winners.

It was a fantastic squad effort from the Saints and a solid performance from CS.

This was the third Georgie Robinson Memorial Match with the score at 2-1 in the Forces' favour.

The Saints hope that this very fitting tribute to their good friend and team mate, who was tragically killed on holiday in South Africa in 2006, will continue for many years to come.

The Saints would like to thank all those who came to support the day and donated to the Rainbow Trust in Georgie's memory, raising over 1000.
