Jimmy Hartley signed off with an impressive double for Harpenden Town on Saturday before flying to Sweden to join Ytterhogdals IK.

Hartley scored Town’s first two goals in their 4-2 victory over Broxbourne Borough at Rothamsted Park.

Harpenden were composed and on top for most of the match as they jumped up to joint sixth with 55 points in the SSML Division One table.

Manager Danny Plumb said: “We played a lot better today helped by consistency of selection with more players available.

“The youngsters like Tom Marino and Jake Collins did well so the future is bright.”

After 11 minutes Hartley was brought down on the edge of Broxbourne’s box. He dusted himself down before curling the free-kick into the top right corner of the net, giving the keeper no chance.

Broxbourne equalised later in the half when Samir Aalit picked up a cross on the right and scored a well taken goal.

Then, right on half time, Town’s Jamil Harvey crossed from the right and the ball fell perfectly for Hartley to blast in his second. Ten minutes after the restart Broxbourne had a penalty saved by Harpenden keeper Sam Taylor, who had a great second half, tipping a shot over the bar and another round the post.

Harpenden took advantage of Taylor’s heroics to put the game beyond Broxbourne. Mark Hitchcock collected a long ball on the left and flicked it on to Harvey who beat his man and then the keeper before slotting the ball into an open net.

Only two minutes later, Harpenden’s defence cleared a corner for it to fall at the feet of Broxbourne’s Matty Thompson who shot through a crowd of players to bring it back to 3-2.

Harpenden won a corner on the right a couple of minutes later and striker Jimmy Warner rose to meet the ball perfectly and his header rocketed into the top corner to make Town fairly comfortable at 4-2.

It had been a frenetic seven minutes with three goals and a penalty save but there were more chances and great saves from Hartley and the result stayed 4-2 for Town.

Harpenden’s next Saturday game at Rothamsted Park is not until April 4 against Codicote, which is the last Saturday match at home for the season.
