Harpenden ladies’ 1sts remain top of East League Division 2C after their top of the table clash with Stevenage 1sts ended in a 1-1 draw.

A tense first half saw Harps dominate the play with a number of short corners, but they were unable to capitalise. Stevenage counter attacked from one such set piece but the hosts’ defence held strong. Goalkeeper Rachael Cleaver was then on hand to make a great save and keep the game goalless at the break.

Determined to get the first goal, Harpenden continued to put pressure on Stevenage but failed to convert chance upon chance. And it came back to bite them as Stevenage took the lead. A last-ditch tackle resulted in a penalty flick which was dispatched.

Harpenden’s unbeaten run looked in further jeopardy when striker Sabrina Jayaseelam was sin-binned but they pressure forward despite being at a numerical disadvantage. The goal finally came from a penalty flick. Natalie Burton was fouled on the goal-line and Laura Pendleton slotted home the chance.

The draw meant Harpenden maintained their unbeaten run and two-point cushion at the top of the table.
