CITY left-back Peter Smith was delighted to see the Saints get back to winning ways after their victory over Weston-super-Mare on Saturday.

Despite Weston propping up the league table, Saturday's game had the potential to be a tricky tie for the Saints and when the visitors took the lead through Ben Cleverley many feared the worst. However two goals from Ian Dunn got City the three points and Smith believes the result will help restore the team's confidence.

"I think we've been a bit unlucky recently, confidence has been down and today could've potentially been a tricky tie," he said.

"We all played well, confidence was getting there and it was a good result in the end.

"I think it was good that we came back straight away. If we didn't come back then it could've been tricky but we got straight back in to it and got level before half time and we were always looking to win the game."

Dunn's two goals on his debut were always going to take the headlines but Smith believes the Saints' new acquisition offers more than just goals to the side.

"He gives us something, as a full-back, when we're in danger to clip up to and he'll look after the ball," said the former Poole Town man.

"He's got his two goals today and he's a good addition to our squad."

Smith has made a dream start to life at Clarence Park himself and received his third successive Player of the Month award before the Weston game.

"The lads were joking, I think we only played one game in January so they gave it to me, but I couldn't have wished for it to go any better really," joked Smith.

"I've come in and got my head down, I've really enjoyed it and to get three Player of the Month awards is brilliant.
