The decision came after a 5-0 home defeat to St Margaretsbury on Saturday.

It was Colney Heath’s fourth successive defeat and comes on the back of a run which has seen the club only win twice in the last 14 games in all competitions.

In a statement Magpies chairman Martin Marlborough thanked Nathan, and his wife Michelle, for their work at the club.

He said: “It is with great sadness that Colney Heath FC have parted company with Manager Micky Nathan due to recent performances and results.

“Colney Heath FC would like to thank Micky and his wife Michelle, for all they have done for the football club over the last year and wish them all the best for their future involvement in football.”

Nathan said on Twitter he was “gutted to be leaving” but vowed he would return.

The appointment of Thompson, and the speed in which it happened, may surprise some.

The former Blueboys boss stepped down from his role at Cotlandswick at the end of last season.

He takes charge with immediate effect with his first game being the trip to Leighton Town on Saturday.
