London Colney kept up their sensational start to the season with a 2-1 win over Tring Athletic – their 15th in 17 Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division games.
Greg Shaw and Spencer Clarke-Mardel got the goals that keep the Blueboys 11 points clear of Hertford Town at the top of the table.
Colney started well and the Tring keeper Jack Hopwood had to be on his toes to cut out balls going to Dave Parkinson and Jon Clements.
A whipped in cross by Clements also caused problems but nobody could apply the finishing touch.
The Blueboys’ best chance of the first half fell to Archie McClelland. After a home defender had sliced the ball up in the air, Clarke-Mardel hooked it back across goal towards Colney’s top-scorer, who was racing in at the far post.
Unfortunately his header hit the post and rebounded out.
For Tring there were efforts from Chris Stapleton, which Tom Gowans did well to tip round the post, and Jack Seaton, who headed over from close range.
But on 54 minutes the Blueboys finally took the lead.
Clements curled over a free kick from the left and Shaw’s glancing header crept inside Hopwood’s near post.
The visitors had to face a lot of pressure from Tring as well as a penalty appeal before seemingly making the game safe five minutes from time.
McClelland did well to win the ball out the right and he quickly played it to Clements who, after beating two or three tackles cut the ball back to Clarke-Mardel who drilled it home.
There was still time for McClelland to be denied one-on-one before Tring pulled a consolation back in the last minute through Luke Dunstan.
Next up for the Blueboys is a home tie against Cockfosters on Saturday.
