Colney Heath bring Brightlingsea Regent to the Recreation Ground on Tuesday evening after earning a FA Vase third round replay on Saturday.

Regent took a two goal lead into the break but Wes Awad’s team clawed their way back into the game and gave themselves home advantage for the replay.

The Magpies started well on Saturday and looked to be the side that would take control of the tie.

And the opener almost came via a Regent defender’s head after Matt Standen cut in from the right and fired towards goal but the goalkeeper made a smart save.

It was the hosts, however, that took the lead. A long throw in was flicked on towards the back post where it was headed into the net. Regent repeated the trick before the break to take control of the match.

The second half was a tight, compact affair with few chances being created, even though Aaron Clarke had come on and was troubling the Regent back four.

The game changed as the managers started to make substitutions. The Magpies, having a strong bench, had more creativity with Rhys Lawrence and Paul Armstrong probing and getting the ball wide to Kevin Ashwood much quicker.

And it was Ashwood that was the architect of the first goal. He rounded the full back before swinging in an inviting cross for Clarke to steer inside the near post.

With 10 minutes left Colney went all-out for the equaliser. Clarke continued to cause problems and he could have scored but he was upended in the box, giving the referee little choice but to award a penalty.

Martin Standen was the calmest man in the stadium as he slammed the ball past the keeper for the equaliser and a place in Monday’s draw.

Matt Standen and Clarke also had chances to seal the game but just couldn’t find the target late on as Regent tired and Colney Heath got stronger.

The replay is on Tuesday evening at the Recreation Ground, kick-off 7.45pm.
