THERE was cup drama for a second successive game at Cotlandswick on Tuesday evening as London Colney recovered from Saturday’s shock FA Vase exit to beat Tokyngton Manor on penalties in the Challenge Trophy.

The Blueboys had been rocked on Saturday by Herts Senior County League side Codicote, who despite finishing with just 10 men progressed at Colney’s expense courtesy of two goals from Leeroy Williams.

They put that disappointment behind them on Tuesday though with a lively start against Tokyngton that resulted in John Butler crashing an effort against the bar.

Tokyngton responded with top scorer Emond Protein firing over the bar and Husein Kharas forcing in-form stopper Mark Whittamore into action.

Butler continued to look the most likely to break the deadlock but he was unable to add that finishing touch, shooting into the side netting.

Neither side was able to force a winner resulting in extra time. Greg Shaw was off target with a free kick and Leoxidre Douglas was the width of the post away from turning Frankie Jowle’s cross into his own net.

In the second period of extra time Tokyngton took charge with Whittamore tipping Leon Johnson’s effort onto the bar and over.

With extra time unable to produce any goals the game went to penalties with Blueboys full-back Kenny Hull the first to miss, as his twice taken penalty was kept out but the visitors also saw one of their initial penalties missed.

The shoot-out moved into sudden death where Tokyngton missed again leaving Aaron Clarke to slot home the winning spot kick.

Blueboys’s successful spot kick takers were Jowle, Danny McCafferty, Andy Saul, Jummy Warner, Craig Knightly, Matt Sutton and Clarke.

Colney: Whittamore; Hull, McCafferty, Saul, Golder (Paradise), Sutton, Jowle, Shaw (Clarke), Butler (Hutchinson), Warner, Knightly. Sub not used: Stevens.
