Anagram Records Trophy Second Round

Brache Sparta 1 Park Street Village 6

MATT Newman scored five goals for the second time in three games as Park Street booked their place in the quarter finals.

The striker has been in devastating form, with this weekend's goal haul takes him to 25 goals and the top of the goalscoring charts.

PSV started brightly, with Andy Murphy and Ant Burns both hitting the post and Burns firing a shot wide before Brache were gifted the lead.

A rare Brache attack saw them launch a cross into the visitors' box and a mix up between centre half Chris Day and goalkeeper Tony Kerby saw Day head the ball into his own net. PSV didn't let this startle them though and they equalised instantly.

Newman crossed the ball for Murphy whose header hit the bar but Newman was on hand to draw his side level.

Brache were reduced to ten men before half time when they had a player sent off for a two-footed tackle on Ant Burns and the visitors came out after the break looking to take advantage of this.

Newman put PSV in the lead shortly after the break when he slotted home a penalty and he completed his hat trick when he latched onto Andy Ruck's pass and calmly fired home.

PSV introduced Craig Britton and he added a fourth when his pace saw him latch onto a pass from Ruck and guide the ball into the net.

Newman scored two more goals to take his tally for the season to 25 and seal PSV's place in the quarter finals.

Boss Ryan Thompson was delighted with his side's performance: "It was a cracking win in really bad conditions. The pitch was boggy and really heavy. There was so much mud that you couldn't see your laces, it was like wearing lead boots.

"It was a comfortable performance, they never really troubled us. They're two divisions above us with better facilities but you can see why they're bottom of their league. We played three in midfield and they didn't have an answer. We had plenty of chances and were by far the better side. It was a great performance and we were always going to be winners. We played in the Anagrams last season and used it to play a few fringe players but this year we're taking it more seriously. There are some big clubs in it that play at Step Five like Takely. We've got Baldock in the next round who we've already beaten and it's our third quarter final of the season."

Thompson also had special praise for his star striker Newman: "Matty has always been a good player but we've noticed that he's more aware now. He's moving the ball quicker when there is a goal scoring chance, defenders can't cope with him."

PSV take on Standon & Puckeridge on Saturday, a team that they have never beaten at this level and Thompson is hoping they can replicate their recent cup runs in their league games: "We've got to take our cup performances and put it into the league. If we put a run together I wouldn't count against us. We've still got to play London Lions twice and the Met Police."

Park Street: Kerby, McCarthy, Thompson, Day, Thorpe, Burns, Ruck, Woodruff, Murphy, Newman, Cattermole. Subs: Thompson, Hill, Ross, Britton.

l PARK Street Reserves welcomed their visitors Met Police (Bushey) Reserves to a very muddy Toulmin Drive, and had every intention of using the pitch to their advantage.

Man of the Match Ian Hurst opened the scoring midway through the first half after a mistake by the visiting defence. PSV's back three defended solidly and their midfield had periods of dominance, showing some class in their passing and creating a hatful of chances. The game didn't get wrapped up until the last few minutes, however, when Aaron King rounded the 'keeper to slot home and seal a 2-0 win that keeps them very much in the title race.
