The development of a new home for St Albans City took centre stage at the club’s fans’ forum at Clarence Park last week.

Joint owner Lawrence Levy stated that he and John McGowan are trying to “secure the future of the club” by finding a new site for a stadium.

Levy said the site in Colney Heath is looking unlikely due to the poor quality of the former landfill site but Radlett remains a possibility. The club is awaiting a decision by the Secretary of State on the controversial Rail Freight on Park Street before it submits an alternative plan that will not only help St Albans City and District Council meet its housing targets but also provide a stadium.

He has also identified two new sites, neither of which he could reveal but assured the forum that the club had no plan to move out of the St Albans district area.

As a backup plan, Levy is also in discussions to re-new the lease at Clarence Park; however, without there necessary opportunities to create new revenue schemes that would see the club become self-sustaining in the future, it is not the preferred option.

A spokesman from community group Protect Clarence Park suggested that “within reason” it wasn’t opposed to minor development of the current three-acre site but there is vehement opposition against expanding beyond the current footfall of Clarence Park.

The other talking points at the forum were:

• School assemblies, which are attended by Levy and a number of players, were highly commended with particular praise given to Matt Taylor and James Kaloczi. They were linked to the recent up-turn in attendances.

• Tom Norman is now the club’s full-time Comerical Manager.

• Joint managers James Gray and Graham Golds believe the club has the players to win promotion this season.
