Duo strike for Colney

Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division London Colney 2 Oxhey Jets 0 AFTER a slow start London Colney hit top gear to sink Oxhey Jets in the Spartan South Midlands Premier Division at Cotlandswick on Saturday. The first chance was created by Steve Flain but his cross evaded David Parkinson and Frankie Jowle. Greg Deacon then saw his fine shot flash just wide of the Oxhey goal and Steve Hawes narrowly missed with a rising shot which flew just over the cross bar. Gary Beadle had a chance for the visitors before half time but his low shot flashed wide and, at the other end, Eamonn Rogers headed across the goal only for Oxhey to clear to Deacon who had his shot saved by Kevin Paul. The Blueboys finally took the lead in the 51st minute when Eamonn Rogers made a surging run forward and his low shot was pushed out to Flain who drove home the rebound. Electric striker David Parkinson then sparked into life and went on a fine run before unleashing a cracking shot which was pushed around the post by Paul. Colney were looking for a second and Deacon crossed for Flain to head wide before Milner had to be alert to save from Beadle as Oxhey pushed at the other end. In the 78th minute London Colney went 2-0 up when Flain played the ball out wide to Greg Deacon who cut into the box and beat two players before finding Parkinson who turned and fired the ball home from 10 yards. Jowle fired wide as Colney pushed for a more convincing score but Oxhey hit back and Milner saved well to deny Paul Turner and Mark Ayres. In the final minute the Blueboys should have gone 3-0 up as Flain sent Ross clear but the attacker was denied by Paul as he came out to smother the ball. London Colney manager Nigel Tester is hoping that his side can hit a run of form at the business end of the season. Tester said: "We need to bag as many points as possible now and finish as high up the league as we can. It is also vital that we reach a cup final to give the players something to look to." David Parkinson and Steve Flain both netted on Saturday and Tester feels his strikers are the key. He said: "If those two play well in whatever game we usually win. They have been missing recently and we have found it hard to take our chances." The manager has also had to cope with losing loan stars Bradley Hewitt who has been called into the Boreham Wood first team, and Harry Hunt who was sent to Welwyn Garden City by Barnet. Tester said: "We have been a little bit stretched but hopefully we will get Bradley back at some stage. You just hope that losing players gives a chance to others and they take it." Colney go to Broxbourne V&E on Saturday and then face Oxford in the league before playing two cup semi finals. The Blueboys take on St Margaretsbury on Tuesday, February 14, in the Herts Charity Cup semi final and face Hillingdon Borough away on Tuesday, February 21, in the Challenge Cup. Tester is hoping his young squad can implement some of the lessons they have learned this season. He said: "It is not about whether they are good enough or whether they are fit enough, it is about having the character and the resolve when the chips are down. If the proper football team turn up then we can win any game.
