Colney lose out to Dunstable and Cranfield

LONDON Colney’s inconsistent form continued as they suffered back-to-back defeats in their matches with AFC Dunstable and lowly Cranfield United.

A 23rd minute strike from Terry Billy was enough for Dunstable to take all three points when the two sides clashed last Wednesday evening.

The goal came about after Bluesboys’ goalkeeper Winston Seidu came rushing out to deal with Hayden Willis’ long ball forward but Billy got their first to nick the ball past the ‘keeper and roll the ball into the empty net.

Seidu produced a brilliant save to deny Ryan Quinn from making it 2-0 and David Parkinson should have made it all square when he was put in on goal but his shot was saved by Dunstable goalkeeper Nick Gardner.

Dunstable wasted a glorious opportunity to double their lead when they were handed a penalty but Dan Liddon dragged his spot kick wide of the target. It mattered little though as Dunstable held on for the three points.

Things were no better on Saturday as the Blueboys slumped to a 2-1 defeat at Cranfield United giving the home side only their second league win on home soil all season.

Debutant Aaron Wilson wasted Colney’s first real opportunity firing wide of the post before Cranfield opened the scoring in the 33rd minute. Seidu was unable to hold onto Ellis Spence’s header and Jelani Blair was on hand to tap the ball home.

Greg Shaw went close with an overhead kick as Colney looked to hit back and Danny Fitzgerald had an effort cleared off the line.

In the second half Wilson was denied by a great save from Ryan Thrussell and just 30 seconds later Cranfield doubled their advantage when Blair’s cross was headed home by Gary Hutchinson.

The Blueboys did net a goal late on when Fitzgerald pounced on a defensive error to score but it proved little more than a consolation.

Colney: Seidu, Hull, McCafferty, Paradise, Murphy, Wilkinson (Dickie), Jowle (Townsend), Shaw, Wilson, Fitzgerald, Mitchell (Parkinson).
