There was plenty of success for clubs, schools and individuals across the district at the Hertfordshire Service to Sports Awards.
Steve Ward of St Albans City Youth Football Club took the Director’s Prize.
The awards committee said: “Steve became involved at the club many years ago as the parent of one of the disability squad players.
“A few years later the club were looking for a suitable individual to take on the stewardship of the Disability Section. Steve was that person and since he took the helm the section has gone from strength to strength.
“The growth of the section, under Steve’s guidance has risen to approximately 60 players across the various age groups all training and playing matches for the club.”
Rosemarie Bethel of Breachwood Green School scooped the David Wray Service to Sport Award.
The committee said: “Rosemarie is a true inspiration which is shown by her passion and commitment.
“Over the past 11 years that the School Sports Partnership programme has been in place she has attended every training course, upskilled her staff, attended every sporting competition, and volunteered her time to make sure that the pupils at her school get every opportunity to be involved in high quality PE and sport programmes.”
Doug Seabrook of Marshalswick Judo Club was named as the Male community Coach of the Year.
“Doug has set an amazing example to all members of St Albans Judo Club through his commitment, performance and professionalism,” said the committee.
“Over his many years of service to the Hertfordshire sporting community, Doug’s performance has been exemplary.
“The results speak for themselves and his infectious enthusiasm, commitment and ability to ‘make it happen’ are an inspiration to others.”
And there was a lifetime achievement award for Phil Gibson, who founded the St Albans Half Marathon in 1982 as a way of raising money for a hospital scanner following the death of his mother from breast cancer.
The race is now a regular date in the running calendar, attracting athletes from all over the world.
