MARSHALWICK Judo Club’s Daniel Mair took the gold medal at the National Open Championships in Kettering.

The 15-year-old Sandringham School student was competing in his first national competition and won all three of his matches with ippon throws.

Mair, who has only just started competing in judo competitions this year, showed great composure and determination against some very experienced judo players on his way to becoming national champion.

Coach Doug Seabrook said: “Daniel has put a lot of hard work into his judo this year and has entered four competitions, taking three gold medals and a bronze.

“It’s Daniels ambition to represent Great Britain at Rio 2016, and he know it’s the start of a long hard journey, but he is very focused on achieving his goal.”
