SWIMMING: CITY of St Albans Swimming Club (CoStA) celebrated the final weekend of the County Championships at Borehamwood with 14 more medals to add to their medal haul from the opening weekend.

The young swimmers brought home an additional six golds, three silvers and five bronze medals, as well as 14 other top eight positions and 42 new personal bests (PBs) between them.

Throughout the Championships, the club won 36 medals, 18 of which were awarded for first place finishes.

Especially impressive, once again, was 11-year-old Dalia Nation who added four more gold medals to the five she had already won during the first weekend of competition.

Nation won the 50m and 100m fly events with times of 35.42s and 1:19.66s respectively.

The young swimmer also took gold in the 200m and 400m freestyle races with winning times of 2:30.05s and 5:18.46s.

Nine-year-old Ben Muckleston, swimming his first ever County Championships, added four more medals to his collection, taking home a total of eight.

Included in his weekend’s successes was a gold medal for the 200m fly, with a fast time of 3:31.65s.

Another young swimmer who impressed was 10-year-old Sophie Pedder.

Pedder won gold in the 400m freestyle and silver in the 200m freestyle with times of 5:23.07s and 2:34.92s respectively. Monica Ong, nine, was also a delight to watch as she snatched the bronze in the 50m breaststroke race.

Among the older juniors, Holly Winfield once again looked assured in the fly events, taking silver in the age 16s 100m event with a new PB of 1:09.85s.

Alex Astley took the bronze in the age 15s 100m backstroke, slicing 1.21s off his PB with a time of 1:08.24s, and 14-year-old Robbie Lightowler took the bronze in the 400m freestyle, knocking over three seconds off his PB.
