James Comley will captain St Albans City following the surprise departure of Ben Martin on Friday.
Martin, 32, joined Vanarama Conference South rivals Boreham Wood ahead of the weekend, vacating the captain’s armband.
Comley, who deputised for Martin in last season’s promotion campaign, was the obvious choice, according to joint manager James Gray. “He’s not just another vocal captain; he leads by example and he can carry players with him - we’re hoping he can continue to do that as captain,” he said.
“I also think it will do him good to take on more responsibility. At times he can be passionate and overstep the mark, he’ll be the first to tell you as much, so hopefully being captain will ground him a bit.”
Comley will lead the team out on Saturday when St Albans travel to Bromley in the league, 3pm kick-off.
