COLNEY Heath suffered a shock defeat on Tuesday evening when they were beaten 3-0 at home in the first round of the Herts Charity Shield.

Spartan South Midlands Division One side Hoddesdon Town were the surprise victors in front of more than 100 spectators, taking the lead after 17 minutes through Aaron Tourlamain and hanging on as Heath assaulted their penalty area for the remainder of the first period.

After a tight opening spell, Hoddesdon won a corner on 17 minutes and Sam Dempsey's set piece was headed in from eight yards at the near post by Tourlamain.

In response Scott Lacey's men pushed forward and on 20 minutes Ian Cooper, who scored a hat-trick against Watford Academy at the weekend, broke clear but saw his shot saved by Allan Buck. After providing the assist for the first goal, Dempsey was then on hand at the other end to clear the ball off his own line when a headed corner saw the ball hurtle towards the goal and the score remained 1-0 at the interval.

On 58 minutes, Tourlamain almost made it two when he cracked a sweet effort on to the crossbar only to see the rebounded effort struck over the cross bar by Brian Okwera.

Tom Cowell came on for the tiring Jason Sorial on 78 minutes and within three minutes the 17-year-old took the ball past two Heath defenders and his pass found Lee Tombs who drove it home to make it 2-0.

Heath continued to bombard their visitors' penalty area but were undone again in the 85th minute when Cowell, a Hoddesdon debutant, scored with a first-time volley, after another Dempsey corner, to make it 3-0 at the death.
