St Albans City broke a club record for the most consecutive away wins on Tuesday night with a 4-0 victory over Hertford in the Herts Charity Cup.

Joint managers Graham Golds and James Gray saw their side extend their unbeaten run away from Clarence Park to 14, equalling the record set in 1921, on Saturday when City beat Weymouth 3-0.

Then, with many of the squad’s younger players out on loan, Saints fielded a strong side that easily swept Hertford aside, scoring all four goals within the first 22 minutes before easing up and coasting over the line.

Golds told the Herts Ad: “We put out a strong side and told the lads we wanted to break the record, which they did. They played some tremen-dous football and scored four good goals.

“It’s an amazing thing for me and James and it’s a place in history for us and the players.”

James Comley got the ball rolling on Saturday against Weymouth, firing in his second goal in two games from 25 yards.

City were made to wait for their second goal but it came in spectacu-lar fashion as Ben Martin, with his back to goal, turned and volleyed the ball past Weymouth custodian Jason Matthews.

All three points were wrapped up by John Frendo, who snapped a four game streak without a goal, when he coolly slid the ball into the net.

Saints’ superb goalscoring form continued on Tuesday night at Hertingfordbury. Chris Watters turned in Lee Chappell’s cross to give City a seventh-minute lead, which was doubled three minutes later by Richard Graham.

The visitors continued to pour forward, allowing Mark Nwokeji to notch a seven-minute brace and send St Albans through to the third round of the competition.

With one eye on Saturday’s FA Trophy tie against Cambridge United, City eased up and gave youngsters Ryan Carroll, Harrison Georgiou and Joel Watson appearances as they saw out the game comfortably.
