ATHLETES from St Albans Athletics Club enjoyed sporting success on a weekend when many sporting fixtures were cancelled due to the extreme cold weather of the last few weeks.

The club had 38 young athletes representing them at the Hertfordshire Cross country Championship which was held on Sunday January 11, in Cassiobury Park in Watford with courses ranging from 1,500m for the Under 11 age groups to 6,000m for the Under 17s. Selection for the county teams was the reward, so these were the races to excel in if you wanted your county vest.

County Champion in the Under 15 Girls race was Izzy Thompson of Beaumont School. Her superior endurance and strength enabled her to take the title convincingly and this, along with her being at the bottom end of her age group, makes this a particularly impressive result. Thompson led the Under 15 Girls team to the silver medal with Laura Farrar and Megan Steer completing the team

St Albans AC Under 15 Boys became County Champions for the first time in the history of the club. The established trio who won the Under 13 title last year is made up of James McMurray (second place), Chris Hilton (tenth) and Oliver Poulain (eleventh).

Other excellent performances were from Elliott Poulain (fifth) and Khallid Al Abaidy (sixth) in the Under 17 race and Daisy Yeomans (sixth) in the Under 17 Women. The Under 13 Girls were represented by six St Albans athletes and outstanding performances by Naomi Hodson (third) and Victoria Pritchard (fifth) secured the team third place.

However it was the Under 11's who stole the show. All 19 athletes showed fantastic determination and comradeship and were rewarded with a clean sweep of medals with the Girls team taking gold, silver and bronze while the boys picked up silver medals. Top 10 finishers in the girls event were Nina Patel (second), Alicia James (fourth), Laura Edwards (seventh), Olivia Almond (eighth), Alice Bentley (ninth) and Gabriella Messent in tenth and in the boys race there were top 10 finishes for Adam Wilmshurst, Alex Brown and Jake Walters.
