LUKE Clarke of St Albans based Verulam Cycling Club braved strong winds to take fourth place in the Welwyn Wheelers Good Friday Time Trial.

In demanding conditions he clocked 1:06:37 over the hilly 26-mile course. Luke's brother Ross took eighth place in 1:08:50 and Jonathan Schubert came in 11th with 1:09:48. The event was won by Tim Bayley of Artic Premier RT in 1:05:50.

The three-fastest Verulam CC riders missed out on the team prize by only a couple of minutes. This was taken by Shorter-Rochford cycling team who, with two riders in the top five, were always going to be difficult to beat.

Verulam CC had 12 riders in the event, which attracted a full field of 140. Tim Gray, the 2007 Verulam Seabird Trophy Champion, was unlucky when he punctured less than a mile from the finish. He limped to the finish in 1:27:15 hoping for better luck (and weather) next year. See www.verulamcc.org.uk for more information about the club.
