Nine-year-old Chris Smith from Batchwood High Performance Centre in St Albans had a successful half term, winning three tennis tournaments.

His first tournament was a regional nine-and-under tournament in Norwich. He won the final in straight sets (7-2, 7-3) against Tom Signy from Norfolk.

Next up was a win in a regional tournament at Woodford Wells, Essex. Against Dhruv Velani from Middlesex, Smith won 7-0, 4-7, 7-4.

His final tournament of the week was in Letchworth playing up an age group for the first time in the 10-and-under County tournament. After coming through the early stages, Chris beat Hertfordshire’s Dominic Merrell 4-1 in the final.

Jon Meredith, head coach at Batchwood, said: “Chris is a very promising player at Batchwood who has been in the programme since the age of four.With continued hard work, the sky is the limit as he is improving all the time.”
