Assistant boss talks about how he has settled in at Clarence Park

NEW St Albans City assistant manager Ken Charlery believes the club are well set to enjoy a good season on the pitch.

Charlery moved to Clarence Park in the summer following new boss David Howell from Harrow Borough and the former Barnet, Peterborough and Farnborough forward says the pair have already settled into their new jobs.

“When you go to a new club – I’ve done it many times in my playing career – when you go to a new club it’s always strange when you first get there but we’ve settled in fine,” Charlery told the Herts Advertiser.

“We’ve just got to get the team now and we’ll be fine. I think we’ll do very well, I’m a positive person and I think we’ll be ok.”

Charlery’s relationship with Howell stretches back to his playing days at Birmingham City when Howell was on manager Barry Fry’s coaching staff and the City assistant believes that long-standing friendship helps the pair to work well together.

“We were at Birmingham before, I was a player and he was a coach,” he explained.

“I’ve known Dave for donkey’s years and we’ve just kept in contact and I was with him at Harrow for five years and it’s been going good down there.

“We’ve got a good team together and it shows, he’s gone away and he’s got the faith in my ability to leave me by myself – not for the first time I might add that I’ve done it all by myself.

“I’m a Licence A coach and I got that and put that to use. At the moment, I’m just looking, I’m observing the trialists seeing if they’ve got two left feet or two right feet or if they’ve got their boots on the right feet. Dave let’s me get on with it, he hasn’t got a problem with that, he knows I’ll do it and it’s good.”
