WILL Chambers (Mid Herts) became the youngest winner of the Herts Boys Order of Merit in 2008 and was presented with the Ted Foster Trophy by the donor at the Herts junior delegates meeting at Mid Herts last week.

One-handicapper Will, who celebrated his 16th birthday last Thursday, finished in the top five in nine club junior opens in which he took part, with victories at Brickendon Grange, Mid Herts and Letchworth, as well as being runner-up at Aldwickbury Park and South Herts and third at Sandy Lodge.

He totalled 220 points to win by 13 from Daniel Ellis Banbury (Letchworth) in the keenly contested scratch event which lists 25 county junior opens as qualifiers, and also the Boys Championship, with the six best combined position points counting. A record 180 boys obtained order of merit points in the scratch section.

Third was Matthew Wallace (Batchworth Park), who won six events, the most recorded in the seven years of the order of merit, but finished four points behind Banbury.

Appointed this season's captain of the county U16s, Will had notable successes last year, winning the English Schools under-16 title and being runner-up in the Irish Boys U16s and also became Redbourn men's club champion.

Gary Fenton (West Herts) won the order of merit handicap prize, presented by sponsor Chris James, and also received a commemorative salver.

l Sandy Lodge team captain Peter York and colleague Andy Barnes were presented with the 2008 Scratch League pennant and trophy as Division One winners at the annual meeting of the Herts Golf Union at Old Fold Manor.

President Terry Trude, who made the presentations, also handed them commemorative plaques.

Division winners who also received plaques were Mid Herts (Div. Two), Bishop's Stortford (Div. Three), Hanbury Manor (Div. Four) Aldenham (Div. Five), Aldwickbury Park (Div. Six); and Chadwell Springs (Div. Seven).

Nick Algate (Moor Park) was presented by the president with the John Gill Trophy as Colt of the Year.

Mike Ready (Old Fold Manor) takes over as county captain from James York (West Herts), with Peter Medcalf (Berkhamsted) as team manager. Ronnie Samuels (Porters Park) and Gerry Van Lotum (Redbourn) were appointed vice presidents, while Robin Colbourne (Moor Park) and Geoff Iddenden (Harpenden Common) were elected members of the county committee.
