Joint managers James Gray and Graham Golds reached a milestone on Tuesday night as they took charge of their 100th league game at St Albans City.

The Saints drew 0-0 with Havant and Waterlooville, although it could have been a much happier occasion if one of the myriad of chances had hit the back of the net.

Speaking to Saintsnet after the game, Gray admitted he’d forgot about the milestone and joked that he could have used it to get more out of his players.

“I completely forgot about it and didn’t mention it in my team-talk. I could have got an extra five, 10 per cent from the boys. That’s disappointing,” he joked.

It’s been over two years since Gray and Golds graduated to senior football and took over from David Howells in November 2012 as caretaker managers. They were offered the job a month later.

“We’ve come a long way,” admitted Gray. “Our first league game was away at Bedworth United and now we’re mixing it with Conference South teams.

“There’s still plenty more to come from this squad. We’re inexperienced but we’re learning. Havant was another scalp, another feather in our cap and now we know how to come down here on a Tuesday night and get a point.”

Gray and Golds have the chance to reach another milestone this Saturday at Clarence Park: their 50th league win.

Fourth-place Basingstoke Town stand in their way. City beat Jason Bristow’s team 1-0 at the Camrose back in November.

“We’ll have to get our tactics spot on because we can’t expand sometimes against the top sides,” he explained.

“We can maybe get our first double, though. Hopefully we get a big crowd and finish the season on a high; I don’t want the season to fizzle out.”
