PAUL Caton of St Albans-based Verulam Cycling Club completed the Whitehorse Challenge near Swindon on Sunday in the second fastest time of 04:29.

With a speed averaging just over 20mph over the 94 mile course, Paul battled for top spot but was just beaten by Richard Todd of the Tortoise Club.

Other impressive Verulam performances came from Richard Marriott, who took 26 minutes off last year's time to finish in 4:54, and Nick Coe who finished in 5:57 despite his rear wheel nearly collapsing.

Challenge rides are increasingly popular in organised cycling. The 500 places on Verulam CC's own challenge ride - the Chiltern Hundred on Sunday, June 1 filled up within days of opening. Challenge rides are not a race but riders try to complete the course as quickly as possible. For a less strenuous challenge, Verulam CC is promoting Ride4aReason which follows 40 and 60 mile routes around Hertfordshire starting and finishing at St Albans. Anyone can ride.
