Cambridge University broke their six-year hoodoo by beating Oxford at Twickenham 23-18 in the annual Varsity rugby match – and part of that success belonged to St Albans.
Head coach of the victorious light blues was Old Albanian player-coach James Shanahan while the Woollams-based rugby club also had prop Will Briggs on the winning side.
And the decisive try was scored by Rory Triniman, who lived in the town and went to Cunningham Hill Junior School until he was eight.
Oxford had won the previous six encounters and had taken the lead through a Basil Strang penalty.
But from the minute Mike Phillips raced in for an intercept try on the stroke of half-time, Cambridge were never headed.
Oxford did peg them back at 13-13 midway through the second period thanks to a Henry Hughes try but Fraser Gillies put them back in front with a penalty before Triniman twisted and turned his way over late on.
Gillies expertly added the converdsion from the touchline and although there was still time for Ed David to go over in the corner, Cambridge saw out the remainnig minutes to cue wild scences of joy.
