Two big away wins may have put St Albans City in a good position as they chase a Vanarama National South play-off spot but manager Ian Allinson has called on the fans to help them get across the line.

Saturday saw City go to a snowy Concord Rangers and come away with a 2-1 win while on Tuesday they returned from Weston-super-Mare with a 2-0 success.

It has them in fourth in the table with eight games to go but while the Clarence Park gaffer says his side are under no pressure, he admits the backing from the terraces could be vital.

He said: “There aren’t many games this season where I can say these players haven’t given me or the club everything. And against Weston they dug really deep.

“The one thing I won’t do is put them under pressure. We’re not under pressure to make the play-offs; we’re not under pressure to win the league. We’re under pressure to stay in the league.

“That’s the way it was two years ago and back then when I asked the supporters to come on board in a relegation battle, they were outstanding.

“And I say to them again; we’ve got an opportunity to get into the play-offs and we need everyone to get behind the changing room and the club and try and get us there.

“And once we do get there, I know this city can turn up because I saw them go to Chesham four years ago.

“The people will come and support us but we need everyone behind us and let’s see where we are in five weeks time.”

The first opportunity comes quickly, with relegation-threatened Poole Town coming to Clarence Park on Saturday.

But Allinson believes it will be tougher than the table suggests.

“To come from behind against East Thurrock [on Tuesday] shows character, shows they are working for each other and if you look at their team on paper you have to question why they are third from bottom,” he said.

“They’ve got some fantastic players and a squad that got them into the play-offs last year.

“That shows something is not quite right but we saw enough when we played them in the FA Trophy back in November to know we are in for a tough game.

“And if we turn up and think the job is done because we’ve won two games on the road, the inconsistency will come back and kick us up the bum and we’ll end up taking a little defeat when we don’t need it.”
