St Albans triathlete Antonia Jubb was crowned British champion, despite a wrong turn at the end of her race.
The 12-year-old had such a big lead that she took victory by 43 seconds, after doubling back to reach the finish.
The STAGS pupil was representing England’s Eastern region at Mallory Park on Bank Holiday Monday and was in the lead pack after the 200m swim.
She pulled away from the rest of the field with another competitor during the 5.6k bike ride and surged to the front during the 1.3k run to win her age group title.
After training hard around her studies, with the support of Tri Force, St Albans AC, Hatfield Swimming Club and Verulam Cycle Club, she said: “Last year I came sixth, so I was eager to go out and win this time round. I’ve put a lot into my training.
“I didn’t swim as well as I’d hoped but on the bike I managed to get ahead. From there I thought I’d go for it and ended up with the win. I’m really happy.”
