Blueboys left green with envy

Spartan South Midlands League Premier Division Holmer Green 3 London Colney 1 LONDON Colney again failed to convert their possession into goals as they slipped to defeat at Holmer Green on Saturday. The Blueboys threatened early on through live-wire striker David Parkinson but he was blocked out and Frankie Jowle was then tackled in the box after a good run. Jowle fired an effort wide after Greg Deacon and Parkinson combined and then Jason 'Trigger' Valentine saw his shot deflected past the post. Parkinson was sent clear by Deacon and the striker appeared to be tripped by goalkeeper Chris Tullett but no penalty was given. Midfielders Hawes and Deacon had further efforts go close before Colney finally got the breakthrough on half time. Parkinson found Deacon who surged away from two players but was then tripped by Hamilton. Amadou Gerber stepped up and fired his penalty kick low into the bottom left hand corner for 1-0. Colney had to make a change at the break with Steve Ashby replacing the injured Eamonn Rogers and Holmer Green took advantage as Colney reorganised. Paul Hamilton fired in at the far post on 47 and then Danny Stone headed home a cross from Tom Bryson on 53 to make it 2-1 to the home side. Colney were denied what they thought was another blatant penalty when Jowle made a dazzling run into the box and was tripped from behind, only for the referee to deny their claims. Greg Deacon was denied the equaliser when his curling shot was brilliantly tipped away by Chris Tullett and, from the resulting corner, Colney were caught out in the 90th minute. Matt Tallyn broke forward and fired into the net to finish the contest at 3-1. Colney had their Herts Charity cup clash at home to St Margaretsbury postponed for the second time on Tuesday. The pitch at Cotlandswick was frozen and Colney will hope for better luck on Saturday when they are scheduled to play Oxhey Jets at home in the league.
