LONDON Colney were made to work hard as they claimed their 10th win of the season away at Sport London e Benfica.

The Blueboys appeared to have a hangover from their efforts last week at Royston, with the hosts enjoying lots of possession and having several attempts on goal. Kevin Bruce, Ivo Barroso and Igor Mayoral all enjoyed time and space to create opportunities for the home side. Herve Soulard made a couple of excellent stops from the free-running home attackers and, when Sport London did beat Soulard, they were denied by the linesman who had spotted a player in an offside position.

Colney replied and Dean Barker had a snap shot that went just wide of goalkeeper Fernando Seidi's post. With half time approaching, a Bruce effort took a deflection off of Dan McCafferty and went over the bar.

Saulo Nascimento had a glorious opportunity to open the scoring but he blazed over the bar when well positioned to score. The half-time whistle was warmly received by the Blueboys who retreated to the safety of the dressing rooms.

The second period started in the same vein as the first, with not much in terms of excitement. The Blueboys created their first goalscoring chance ten minutes after the break. Barker, Jermaine Davey and Dave Corran combined to release Greg Shaw but his shot was saved by Seidi.

Chances were few and far between and the Colney management acted in an attempt to steal an away win. With 75minutes gone, they introduced Paul Danslow and Sam Mitchell and these changes brought the Blueboys to life, with Danslow holding the ball up for his midfield to support.

Five minutes after the substitutions were made the Blueboys got the luck they'd been looking for as Danslow and Mitchell combined to give the Blueboys the lead. Mitchell knocked a free kick into the box for Danslow and the striker headed the ball down to Seidi's left with the ball slipping through the 'keeper's hands and into the net. The goal gave the Blueboys confidence and efforts from Mitchell and Dave Corran tested the host's 'keeper Seidi.

Seven minutes later Sport London broke down the left and Dinarte Andrade took advantage of a slip by Lee Benning to fire in a tremendous left-foot pile driver that was stopped magnificently by Soulard, only for the ball to fall to Bruce who equalised for the hosts.

This didn't dent the Blueboys' confidence though and they took the game to the hosts. As the game moved into the last minute of stoppage time a tremendous bout of passing between Corran and Danslow saw the latter push the ball into the path of Mitchell and he drove the ball past Seidi before racing off to celebrate with the two loyal fans behind the goal as Colney secured another three points.

London Colney: Soulard, Benning, McCafferty, Simmonds, Dickie, Humbert, Barker (Paradise), Rowley, J Davey (Danslow), Shaw (Mitchell), D Corran.

l The Reserves picked up three vital points with a 4-3 win over St Margaretsbury. Russell Gallagher had a fine game scoring two well-taken goals with the others coming from Sebastian Thomas and Super-Sub Josh Godden.
