The visitors enjoyed a lot of the possession after the break but they couldn't turn it into goals.
Simmonds raced clear of the Holmer Green defence, rounded goalkeeper Charlie Fanner but went down as he tried to shoot. Simmonds had to go off injured and was shown a yellow card for simulation.
Colney eventually got a second goal 12 minutes from time when Greg Shaw drove the ball into the far corner from a free kick.
Nesan Jeyaratnam should have made it 3-0 when he intercepted a square pass but Fanner saved his effort although the visitors did get a third in injury time.
Jeyaratnam laid the ball off to Gallagher who curled the ball into the bottom right hand corner giving Fanner no chance.
