The St Albans & District Bowling Association finals were held last weekend at Townsend (Men and Mixed) and at Hemel Hempstead (Ladies).
Harpenden had won through to four finals, the Men's Harry Stanford Singles, the Men's Gorhambury Fours, the Stockman-Winser Mixed Fours and the Ladies' Officers Singles and they achieved 100 per cent success, winning all four titles to add to the Bob Vise Trophy won last week.
David Brooks won the Singles for the third time, beating his clubmate, Tony Redford, and making this the fifth time in six years that Harpenden have won the trophy.
In the Fours, the team of Rob Newby, Doug Hall, Simon Burgess and Tony Redford comfortably beat North Mymms 24-7, their opponents conceding the match after 18 ends, and they retained the title they won last year.
Harpenden's Mixed Fours team of Jan Reid, Linda Newby, Rob Newby and Simon Burgess had a much closer match with Richard Pearce's Potters Bar four, not more than two shots being scored on any end except for the 19th when Potters Bar scored three shots to bring them within four shots of Harpenden at 16-12.
Each team scored one shot on the last two ends, Harpenden winning 17-13, the first time the club has won the trophy.
The Ladies' Officers Singles final between Linda Brooks (Harpenden) and May Gunn (Shire Park) was a real cliffhanger.
Linda was slow to get off the mark and found herself 2-13 down after 10 ends and 7-19 down after 17 ends, but thereafter her opponent did not score another shot.
On the next four ends Linda won eight shots (2, 4, 1, 1) to make the score 15-19 but on the next end Gunn, holding one shot and attempting to score another to win the match, was unfortunate to knock the jack to Linda's three back woods and on the next two ends Linda scored a one and a two to win the match 21-19.
In a friendly triples match Harpenden men beat Abbotts Langley 106-45. Top rink: Gordon Pool, John Millins and Ted Pentecost, 36-7 and in the last match of the season, a mixed triples, Harpenden beat little Gaddesden 92-49.
Top rink: Sue Murray, Alan Gray and Doug Hall with an amazing score of 34-2.
In the District Benevolent Triples Gala, the Batchwood Hall team of Teresa Wood, Jackie Bell and Liz Schlatter came first, winning the trophy. They won each of their four games and had the highest shot difference overall.
The friendly match of Batchwood men against Potten End proved to be an enjoyable afternoon with good humoured banter throughout the game not forgetting some excellent bowling.
Batchwood were victorious on all but one of the four rinks and won overall by 12 shots - Batchwood 73 Potten End 61.
Top Rink: M Davis, D Paul, E Jacobs, J Harvey (21-10)
In the Men's District Competition, Mike Davis beat Mick Andrews (Harperbury) 21-8 in the Champion of Champions final.
